HMRC increasingly requires individuals to have a Personal Tax Account (PTA), for example to report capital gains on residential property or to claim a grant under the Self Employment Income Support Scheme.
Instructions on how to set up your Personal Tax Account follow below. You will need the following details:
- Your National Insurance number or UK address
- A recent payslip, P60 or a valid UK passport
PTA Set Up SH
- Click on https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account and “Start now”
- Select “Create an account” and Continue
- Select either “Create a Government Gateway account” (preferred) or “Create a GOV.UK Verify account” (these guidance notes continue per Government Gateway)
- Click on “Create sign in details”
- Enter your email address, Tick box to confirm it is correct and continue
- Check incoming email, copy across the code (excluding CF-) and confirm
- The next screen should say “Email address confirmed”, continue
- Enter your full name and continue
- Enter password (noting conditions), re-enter to confirm and continue
- Set up recovery for your user ID: continue
- Enter recovery word and continue (remembering to save this word)
- Make a note also of your user ID (12 digit number) and password, continue
- Choose your account: “Individual” and continue
- We’re changing the way you sign in: continue
- Select HMRC app, or text message, or voice call (text recommended) and continue
- Enter your mobile phone number + UK “Yes”, and continue
- Enter 6 digit number texted to your iPhone and continue
- “You have successfully set up extra security”, continue
- Set security backup: (suggested) “I can’t do this right now” and continue
- (Backup not set) continue
- We just need to confirm who you are: continue
- Confirm your identity: Name(s), NI number and DOB, continue until set up process has been completed.
