The latest creative industries statistics published by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) mark a significant milestone for the UK theatre sector, confirming that cumulative payments made under Theatre Tax Relief (TTR) have now exceeded £1bn, reaching £1.13bn since the relief was introduced in 2014.
Over that period, claims have been made in respect of 33,670 productions, underlining the central role TTR now plays in supporting the UK’s theatre industry.
In the year to March 2025 alone, £258m of relief was paid in relation to 4,655 productions, representing an 11% increase on the previous year. The enhanced relief rates introduced in 2021 have helped drive claim volumes to more than double pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating the continued importance of the relief in supporting production activity across the sector. Following the decision at the Spring Budget 2024 to make higher rates permanent, qualifying touring productions can now claim relief at 45%, while non-touring productions can benefit from relief at 40%, worth up to 36%/32% of core expenditure respectively.
Importance to the UK economy
The milestone comes at a time when the theatre sector continues to demonstrate both resilience and economic value. According to Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and UK Theatre’s “Theatre in the UK 2026” report, more than 37m people attended member venues during 2025. The report also highlights theatre’s wider contribution to the UK economy, supporting more than 100,000 full-time equivalent jobs and generating an additional £1.40 of local economic activity for every £1 spent on a ticket.
Despite strong audience demand, many organisations continue to face significant financial pressure. SOLT and UK Theatre report that production costs have doubled over the past decade, driven by rising labour, energy and operating costs, while more than a third of organisations expect to report a deficit. In that context, the continuation of enhanced Theatre Tax Relief rates provides crucial support, helping producers manage financial risk, invest in new productions and sustain employment throughout the sector.
Reaching this milestone highlights the significant role Theatre Tax Relief now plays in supporting the UK’s theatre sector. Over the past decade, the relief has provided a valuable source of funding for productions of all sizes, helping to attract investment, support employment and maintain the UK’s reputation as a world-leading destination for theatre.
